No universal routine can guarantee a service life. Substrate, drainage, use, formulation, installation and maintenance all influence how the surface changes over time.
How winter changes conditions at the surface
Environment and Climate Change Canada identifies snow, freezing rain, ice and flash freezes among cold-season hazards. Water can therefore move quickly between liquid and frozen states on an outdoor finish or in a poorly drained area.
The wearing course is only one part of the assembly. A substrate crack, moving edge or trapped water can show through at the surface, which is why maintenance should include drainage and transition checks rather than cleaning alone.
The fall check
Before regular freezing begins, remove leaves, sand and organic matter. Debris can block an outlet, hold moisture or conceal an opening that becomes harder to monitor under snow.
Review edges, joints, thresholds and areas where water remains after rain. If lifting, an opening or a soft spot appears, have the cause assessed rather than sealing it without a diagnosis.
